Avena has made the abrupt shift from wearing her Thomas the Train fleece all day, everyday, to wanting to wear her pink winter coat and a tutu all the time. Who would have thought? She looked really cute in her purple Christmas dress, and insisted on adding the tutu to the ensemble. Is it too much?
Somehow Aunt Laurie knew that the tutu was the must have item of the season, and a purple one showed up on Christmas morning. (Yes, she was wearing the pink tutu with her pj's until she opened the new one.)
So, the day after Christmas we went to the Discovery Museum in Sausalito to celebrate the first day of Kwanzaa. We didn't know much about Kwanzaa, except that it's a time to celebrate family and unity, and who couldn't use a little of that? The museum had their Kwanzaa altar set up with candles, gourds, corn, and other small gifts, and E.W. Wainwright and his band performed a show they call the African Roots of Jazz, which was a mix of poetry, music, and a little history. Before the concert we played at Avena's favorite spot in the museum - a little "river" full of plastic fish and frogs. We have spent a lot of time there!
After the fish and frogs, we had some hula hoop time. The museum is at the base of the Golden Gate Bridge, in what used to be Fort Baker. It's one of the prettiest spots I've visited.
This is Avena during the concert. All the kids were dancing, and not to be outdone, she threw down the gauntlet with the splits. Hilarious.
